May & June at The Quay School: Celebrating Achievements, Adventures, and a Wonderful Year

The final weeks of the school year were bursting with energy, pride, and fun! From school tours and singing festivals to Active Schools Week and graduation, The Quay School ended the year with smiles, sunshine, and unforgettable memories. Here’s a roundup of what made May and June so special.


Fitness, Fun, and Team Spirit at Fyffes Fittest School Finals

A huge well done to our pupils who reached the Fyffes Fittest School Provincial Finals in Roscommon! Third class showed amazing support on the day, and all classes worked hard during the 10-week challenge. 💪
Thanks to our teachers and SNAs for making it all possible! What a great team effort!


Adventures in Chess and Choir

6th class represented our school at a chess event in Sacred Heart School, Westport. ♟️
And a special shoutout to Siobhan, James, Moses, and Tristan who performed in the National Children’s Choir at the National Concert Hall in Dublin. Huge thanks to Ms Hope and Ms Chambers for preparing them so beautifully!


Scoil Cheoil Visit & Irish Music Fun

We were thrilled to welcome Sal, Maggie, and Dr Maura Thornton from Scoil Cheoil, who shared stories about their summer music school and traditional Irish music. 🎶


Confirmation & Communion Celebrations

6th class pupils received their Confirmation and 2nd class pupils celebrated their First Holy Communion at St Mary’s Church, Westport. Thank you to Ms Chambers, Ms Walshe, our priests, and all the parents for their support. 🙏


Pedal Power for Bike Week

Over 40 pupils from 4th–6th class cycled through Westport as part of Bike Week. 🚴
Thanks to Green-Schools Travel, Mayo Schools Partnership, our local Gardaí, and teachers for a safe and fun day!


A Month of School Tours

Classes went near and far on exciting school tours!

  • 5th & 6th class went to Wildlands adventure centre
  • 2nd class visited an aquarium and Monkey Business
  • 3rd & 4th toured Sligo ATU
  • Junior & Senior Infants had a fantastic day at Graune Pet Farm 🐐

Each group came back with happy memories and big smiles!


Science and Stories Come Alive

4th class impressed everyone at the ESB Science Blast in UL with their amazing project and poster. 🔬👏
And storyteller Niall de Búrca wowed all classes with his magical tales during his visit. 📚


Dancing, Drumming & Moving to the Beat

All classes enjoyed four weeks of dance with Sarah from Mayo School of Ballet and showcased their talents in drumming sessions with Anthony McNamee. 🕺🪘
The rhythm was alive at The Quay!


Mindfulness & Wellbeing Days

Junior and Senior Infants enjoyed peaceful Wellbeing Days, supported by 4th class and Múinteoir Charlene. From meditation and deep breathing to friendship games and emotional stories, everyone had a lovely time together. 🧘


Bees, Safety & Fun Learning

Junior Infants had a buzzing visit from Padraic the beekeeper and asked great questions about bees. 🐝
The Irish Coast Guard also came to teach all students about water safety, with fun practice on using ring buoys. 🚨


Family Fun Day & Active Schools Week

Our Family Fun Day was a massive success—thank you to our Parents Association, volunteers, and generous sponsors! 🎪👏
During Active Schools Week (#ASW25), students enjoyed:

  • Railyard fitness with Declan
  • Pickleball, table tennis, and soccer with SoccerStars Mayo
  • GAA coaching with Tim
  • Workouts with George
  • Bouncy castles, drumming, and more!

A week full of movement, laughter, and sunshine! ☀️💪⚽


It’s Our Planet: A Lesson in Sustainability

3rd class took part in the “It’s Our Planet” program with Junior Achievement Ireland. With help from Stephanie from AIB Westport, they learned how to protect habitats, reduce waste, and care for the Earth. 🌍

Creative Writing in Memory of Oisín

The Oisín Kennedy Writing Competition took place in beautiful sunshine.

Junior & Senior Infants in Action

From drumming with Anthony to Active Week activities and the Fun Run, our youngest students had a blast this term! Whether playing table tennis or bouncing with joy, they gave it their all! 🛝


End-of-Year Fun Run & Ice Cream

We ended the year with a fantastic Fun Run for all pupils and staff—followed by a well-earned ice cream in the sunshine. 🍦
The perfect way to celebrate all the hard work and fun this year!


6th Class Graduation & Farewell

We proudly celebrated the 6th Class of 2025 with a lovely graduation ceremony. They were cheered on by classmates in a special farewell tradition—clapping hands as they left The Quay School one last time. 👩‍🎓🧑‍🎓
We wish them every success and happiness in secondary school!


Grandparents’ Comhrá – Stories from the Heart

Our 5th and 6th class students shared heartfelt and humorous stories with their grandparents for the “Comhrá na Seantuismitheoirí” project. A beautiful reminder of the wisdom and love across generations. 💬📚


A Thank You to Our Retiring Teachers

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the retirement of three remarkable members of our school community:

  • Ms. Ann Lally – retiring after an incredible 39 years of commitment and care
  • Muinteoir Annin – departing after 23 years of devoted teaching and support
  • Ms. Stephanie Hope – leaving us following 20 years of valued service

Together, they’ve given a combined 82 years to our school, shaping generations of pupils and inspiring countless colleagues. Their passion, kindness, and professionalism have left a lasting legacy at The Quay School. Thank you for everything—you will be missed dearly. 💐👏


As another amazing school year comes to a close, we thank our students, teachers, SNAs, parents, and community for making The Quay School such a special place to grow and learn.
