Active School
What we do
About our Activities
St Colmcille’s NS has decided to participate in the Active School Flag (ASF) process and the associated Active School Week (ASW).
The ASF process is an enjoyable experience for children and teachers and it brings the school community together in a fun and exciting way. It allows parents, local clubs and the wider community to become more involved in school life.
The Active School Week (ASW) was a new experience for our school. It was inclusive of all children and focused on cooperative games rather than competition. The children in the school completed many activities which they previously had not. It was evident from the smiling faces and the atmosphere in the school during ASW that the children really enjoyed the activities. The comments and feedback from teachers, parents and children further highlighted the fact that ASW was enjoyable, rewarding, fun and most of all active for all children in the school.

Physical Activity
The children and staff enjoyed dancing to our Halloween themed Feel Good Friday for ActiveSchools during break time. Well done to all our boys and girls… some great dance moves on the AstroTurf.
Physical Education
Our school ensures all classes cover five PE strands annually: Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games, and Outdoor & Adventure. Pupils in 1st to 6th class complete a 6-week block of swimming lessons annually, fulfilling the Aquatics strand. A standardised timetable promotes synchronized teaching of each strand—see the attached schedule.
Partnership
Our Active School Committee plays a key role in our school. They meet monthly to plan activities, update the notice board, assist with Sports Day, lead structured yard play, manage P.E. equipment, and conduct surveys.
We also welcome local sports clubs and activity providers throughout the year and during Active School Week.
First class had a fantastic dance lesson with Sarah from Mayo School of Ballet this morning in the sunshine—great job, everyone!
