Active Schools

St Colmcille’s NS has decided to participate in the Active School Flag (ASF) process and the associated Active School Week (ASW).

The ASF process isย an enjoyable experience for children and teachers and it brings the school community together in a fun and exciting way. It allows parents, local clubs and the wider community to become more involved in school life.

The Active School Week (ASW) was a new experience for our school. It was inclusive of all children and focused on cooperative games rather than competition. The children in the school completed many activities which they previously had not. It was evident from the smiling faces and the atmosphere in the school during ASW that the children really enjoyed the activities. The comments and feedback from teachers, parents and children further highlighted the fact that ASW was enjoyable, rewarding, fun and most of all active for all children in the school.

See the other sections of our website for more information and updates on our process.

Physical Education

Our schools ensures that each class is taught 5 different PE strands each year, namely Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games and Outdoor and Adventure.

Our school policy states that 1st to 6th class pupils attend a block ofย  6 weeks swimming lessons each year, covering the Aquatics strand of the PE curriculum.

We have a standardised PE timetable which means that each teacher promotes the teaching of a particular strand at the same time. See our timetable attached here.

Partnership

Our Active School Committee have lots of responsibility in our school.

They meet each month to discuss various activities that are taking place, inform the whole school what is happening, update the notice board, assist with Sports Day, take leadership during structured play on yard. They take care of the P.E. equipment, carry out surveys when needed.

Our school invites different sports clubs/physical activity providers from the local community to visit our school during the year and during Active School Week.
